ABOUT
Photobiomodulation for the treatment of dry eye
Photobiomodulation (PBM) is an innovative method for treating dry eyes, which is particularly effective for patients suffering from meibomian gland dysfunction (DGM). Using non-ionizing light sources like LEDs and lasers, PBM stimulates cells to improve meibum production, thereby reducing inflammation and promoting tissue healing.
How does photobiomodulation work?
PBM works by using low-energy LED lights that penetrate tissue to stimulate mitochondria, the “power plants” of cells. This leads to a series of biological reactions that improve meibum production and reduce inflammation.
- Light Sources Used:
- Lasers
- Light emitting diodes (LEDs)
- Visible and near infrared light (400 — 1100 nm)
- Observed biological effects:
- Pain reduction
- Immunomodulation
- Promotion of healing and tissue regeneration
Application in the treatment of dry eyes
PBM is particularly useful for stimulating the meibomian glands, improving tear quality, and relieving dry eye symptoms. Treatments include several sessions of 15 to 20 minutes, which are generally comfortable and non-invasive.
- Treatment modalities:
- Several treatment sessions
- Using LED lights to stimulate glandular function
- Photobiomodulation sessions (LLLT) to reduce inflammation
Benefits of Photobiomodulation
Photobiomodulation offers several advantages over traditional treatments for dry eye:
- Non-Invasive and Safe: No pain or discomfort during treatment
- Efficiency: Significant improvement in dry eye symptoms for the majority of patients
- Reduction in symptoms: Reduces redness, irritation and burning sensations
