General information

  • Current condition: Small chalazion persisting in the right eye, upper eyelid. It used to be bigger but has shrunk in size. The affected eyelid is redder than the other, although the chalazion itself has no redness. The chalazion is not very malleable and cannot be crushed.
  • Evolution time: Approximately one year with variations in size and position.

Medical history

  • Surgical history: Cataract surgery about two years ago. Appearance of the first chalazion shortly after surgery.
  • Past consultations:
    • Optometric consultation a year ago: Presence of 2 to 3 chalazions.
    • Prescription of an antibiotic and eye drops at this time.
    • Currently, only one chalazion persists.
  • Current status of the patient:
    • Daily screen time: 4-5 hours.
    • Eyelid cleaning with towel and baby shampoo.
    • Intermittent treatment with a warming mask 3-4 times a week, followed by chalazion massages.
    • Several chalazions that have occurred intermittently since cataract surgery.
    • Aesthetic treatments (fibroblast IPL and peeling) twice a year.

Ongoing treatment and evolution

  • Prescribed home treatments:
    • Warming mask applied more frequently (TID - 3 times a day).
    • Cleaning with Zocufoam morning and evening.
    • Stop using baby shampoo.
  • Clinical treatment:
    • Initial eyelid cleaning session (ZEST) combined with photobiomodulation (LLLT).
    • Result after cleaning the eyelids: Chalazion practically resorbed, with slight persistent redness at the base of the right upper eyelid.

Recommended treatment plan

  • Complete IPL treatment protocol:
    • 3 IPL sessions to reduce the risk of recurrence.
    • Annual preventive maintenance IPL session.

Conclusion

A chalazion dating back more than 5 months was resolved after a treatment combining eyelid cleaning with the Zocular ZEST system, photobiomodulation and an optimized home care protocol. In order to minimize the risk of recurrence, a comprehensive IPL protocol is recommended, followed by annual maintenance.
